Some lucky distributor is going to make bank off of this great film by a skilled director and soulful screenwriter. The Chumscrubber (German: Glück in kleinen Dosen) is a 2005 American-German comedy-drama film, directed by Arie Posin, starring an ensemble cast led by Jamie Bell. While some of these moments are pointless, others change the way the film would have played, and it's interesting to see what might have been, with the exception of the alternate "ending," which never would have worked. This movie will show you clearly what category you should belong to. Many people will hate this movie because it is so off the wall, but I didn't want it to end. If you are a fan of Independent American Cinema then this film is a must as it is a beautiful and clever criticism of modern suburban (American) life and its effect on the family structure. It's not often that you hear about big A-list composers taking on small independent films to score, usually because the productions can't afford to hire such in-demand talent. Written by While it's certainly a compelling, unique film, with an ending that will stick with you, it doesn't have that special ingredient that separates a Donnie Darko or a Garden State from the rest of the surburban experience genre. At the same time, movies from the second and much smaller group for some reason (which is hardly explainable sometimes) get all possible attention and sometimes they can replace mainstream production in theaters. The title may have been off-putting to mass-distribution, but it's a clever metaphor for the allegory of oblivious parents in a sunny, picture-perfect California suburb. The director did a great job with continuity; the chumscrubber shows up early on before we even know who he is. A darkly satiric story about life crumbling in the midst of a seemingly idyllic suburbia. Few films have polarized audiences (fortunate enough to have experienced this little film) as much as THE CHUMSCRUBBER, a film that is unique in its brave depiction of American suburbia, a place where 'things' have absorbed our attention and 'people' have all but melted into the woodwork. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends. Everyone in town is too self consumed to worry about anything else than themselves. Those "imaginary" sequences are much more convincing in established classics like for example "Donnie Darko" (which is one of THE best movies in cinematic history). It felt a bit too fluffy, but Posin does add some insight into the movie.
